I have a Canon EOS 400D. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and now when I plug my camera into my USB, the EOS Utility comes back with a message 'Unable to initiate Program. If I unplug my camera, the program will start.

I used to have it set up that when I plugged my camera in, it would auotmatically start downloading my pics to date folders. That was using the dreaded Vista and SP3 before it. IO have reset my camera settings on the camera, I have removed all traces of the canon from my laptop. I re-installed all the relevant software using the latest versions as I have lost my original disk.Any advice/help would be appreciated except for smart remarks. Being new to this forum doesn't mean I am new to the Internet or computers.Cheers in advance.

I have to have two versions of EOS utility running, one for my 5D and one for my later camera. The canon update install moved the early version to a subfolder, so it was preserved, but I had to figure out what had happened. The older version every now again forgets the camera and has to be started manually and have the option to start when the camera is connected reset. Under vista I have to agree to allow the program control to set this option.

I don't know windows7 but the error message suggests a permissions fault so try starting the program manually and look for preferences. You may have to connect tge camera after it has loaded. FWIW Original Canon software disks & Manuals are available from.

There's a link at the head of this Canon Confab column.I have a range of Canon Eos DSLRs from the 10D through to the 1D Mark IV, and I've been able to communicate with all of them via the USB terminal - but my PC still uses Win XP SP3, as does my laptop - bought specially when all others in John Lewis had moved to Windows Vista.Compatibility across my range of DSLRs, versions of DPP, Canon Utilities, etc. And Windows versions is something which does worry me, and I fear will continue to be a problem. I prefer to use a card reader when moving files from camera to computer, and for some time the local shops have offered computers which didn't have card readers with a slot for CF cards - even though they often had more RAM than my PC had when new. Fortunately there are still specialist dealers offering what we need, and it is possible to find USB card readers offering a very wide range of slots. Click to expand.Nuisance.

I just bought a mac to save the compatibility fight windows 8 vs Canon software ( new Pcs seem to have windows 8 ) only to find the 5D is not supported at all! Apparently Macs changed their microprocessor in circa 2007 and none of the 5D vintage software is available for the current processor - it was very interesting challenge to load a current DPP given that new macs have no CD drive.I can understand that a new version of EOS utility might be needed for remote capture using live-view and video but surely they could retain the download via cable facility for older cameras.

Hi Heather1,Thank you for posting. The EOS Rebel XTi is not compatible with Windows 8, or later, so it won't be able to communicate with Canon Software on your computer. I regret the difficulty this causes. To remedy this, I recommend use of a Compact Flash card reader to download your images. A card reader is an inexpensive device that allows you to download your images and video without connecting your camera to your computer. You remove the memory card from your camera and plug it into the card reader. The card reader plugs into a USB port, allowing your computer to access the pictures and videos on your memory card.Card readers can be purchased at many photography and electronics stores. This device will allow you to take the memory card out of the camera and plug into your card reader and the card reader plugs into the computer's USB port. You may be able to transfer images from the card reader with the Windows Photos App, included with Windows 10.

Karen or Mom this is a 3 year old thread. You might want to start your own. In the mean time, what exactly are you tying to do?

When you are using a pretty old camera with a current computer it is best to use a card reader. Some computers have card readers built in but you can buy one. Don't get the cheapest one get a good one. They are still not expensive. Your XTi uses CF type cards so make sure the reader accepts CF cards.

The CF card sits inside a door on the camera. Handle it with care when removing it and reinserting it.

I know this ia an old post, but I just recently ran into this same problem. I tried running EOS Utility in different Windows compatibility modes with no success. I then went to the Canon support page and found the XSi was the oldest camera they had support for and downloaded the EOS Utility for that. Download and intall EOS Utility 2. When connecting your camera, it wont automatically open EOS Utility 2, but once you open the utility manually the camera will connenct and upload picters just like it use to.

Haven't tried any other functionality of the utility yet.Hope this helps others in the future.
