Hello,I picked up an old vintage sea king (Montgomery Wards) and haven't got the darnedest clue about it.The motor turns over, and what appears to be the serial number of #101923. There is also another serial number on the motor that is imprinted on a cap that is two lines #449 (top line) and #3004 (bottom line).I have been tinkering with the motor and there seems to be no spark, so I am in the process of pulling the flywheel off to get to the brains to diagnosis the no spark issue. The good news is that it turns over, and almost everything seems to be able to move freely.
I say almost because I can't get the darn flywheel off. Now I have had some stubborn engines in the past but I cant get this one to budge. I have a flywheel puller and have actually broke three bolts off attempting to pull the flywheel off. I have it soaking in WD40 over night and need to run to the hardware store tomorrow to grab some new bolts:/Now for the questions. What is this motor (hp)? What is the pre-mix ratio? Is this thing air-cooled?Any advice in getting the flywheel off? Gas mix is 16:1 it has a water pump which is that little line that is between the drive shaft tube and exhaust tube. I would check the lower unit and refill with what it calls for but most people just useGrade 8 bolts should be strong enough to pull that flywheel off.Check that coil as if its old and cracked you will need a replacement. Condenser might be bad also.Don't be surprised if the carb floods as there are many motors with a cork float which is easily made or repaired and sealed with super glue. When you get running make sure that water pump running by either the tell tale or water coming out of the exhaust relief or you have problems some where in the cooling.
As for location of tell tale or exhaust relief where water comes out another member can help you as i dont know where it is on that motor.I hope this helps. I know you guys are probably rolling your eyes at me.I forgot to take the nut off the flywheel before attempting to remove it.
I knew there was something fishy going on:bonk:Anyways the flywheel popped right off. The points were all corroded so I gave them a nice bath and BOOM the engine now has spark.
I cleaned the carbs as well, which by the way are a very primitive species. I have never worked with something this old and it is cool to see how something so simple as evolved over the years. So this brings me to my next question, the gas tank. Thank god it is aluminum because it is quite clean I would say for its age. There is however some gunk in there. So what is a good method for cleaning one of these old aluminum gas tanks out? I was thinking soak it in carb cleaner, then wash it out with gas till it is clean.Any thoughts? My second question is how do I go about dropping the lower unit to take a look at the impeller?
I made an attempt at it but before I go banging things with a hammer I wanna make sure I am doing it right.Do I need to disconnect the drive linkage from the power head or can I do it from the lower end, need some advice all you antique gurus! I don't know if anyone is still following this but I have put everything back together on the engine and it is ready to be ran. Only problem is I am only getting spark on the right cylinder.I checked both plugs on the good wire and they are both getting spark, so this leads me to believe that the spark plugs are still good.
I then checked the continuity of the wires from the coil to the plug and both are good.I don't know where to go from here.could one of the wires not be engaging with the coil? I don't wanna just yank out the wire and not be able to put it back into the coil.need some guru advice!- Post added at 12:50 AM - Previous post was at 12:42 AM -On a side note the coil has those big metal fins (for lack of a better word) sticking out of them for each spark plug and they originally had a black paint like material on them and I had to hit one with the wire wheel because of a build up of rust and that one happens to be the one that is not getting spark.Do these fin things need to have a coating on them? Is it possible that I am getting an arc off of it because it is not coated/painted?Just a thought.
